As Israel’s government makes urgent contingency plans to deal with a possible trade embargo from Europe, its President attends a commemoration of the massacre of 49 civilians including many women and children, in the Arab village of Kafr Qasim, just 20km outside Tel Aviv, by Israeli troops in 1956.
The Israeli president said:
‘I stand before you, the families of the victims and the wounded, as a son of the Jewish people and the President of the state of Israel, to feel the pain with you. The heinous killing that took place in your village is a dark and most unusual chapter in the history of the relationship between Jews and Arabs living here.’
President Rivlin labelled the killings ‘a terrible crime’ and referred to the ‘manifestations of racism and arrogance‘ of his countrymen. However, it would seem that this apology to be less than sincere having regard to the July massacre in Gaza by the IDF in which the sons and daughters of thousands of civilian families were butchered or wounded during Israel’s recent military attack, ‘Operation Protective Edge’.
To date, no one has yet been indicted and brought before the ICC International Court to answer charges of war crime in Gaza during that operation.
