Former Chairperson of the UN Working Group on the use of mercenaries, José L. Gómez del Prado, explains how private military and security companies have created an association to counter the regulations called for by his working group.

The International Code of Conduct for Private Security Service Providers (ICoC), mostly composed of Amercian and British companies, now seeks legitimacy with the UN despite having a record of human rights violations. At the end of July 2013, the UN Working Group is holding a session in New York where it will launch a study on the use of private military and security companies by the UN. The ICoC will incidentally be launched in September 2013. Will the UN give contracts to mercenary companies and human rights violators?
