The Prime Minister and the commander of the international forces in Afghanistan have agreed that accelerated training of Afghan army and police needs to be at the centre of NATO’s counter-insurgency efforts in future.
Gordon Brown met General McChrystal in Downing Street yesterday to build on discussions from their last meeting, in Afghanistan on 29 August.
A spokesman for the PM said they discussed the General’s strategic assessment of the campaign in Afghanistan and agreed that the mission was at a vital stage.
He added that Mr Brown looked forward to further discussion of General McChrystal’s recommendations amongst NATO allies in coming weeks.
