HAVANA: Latin America will be the United States’ “second Vietnam” if the U.S. government continues its “military aggression” in the region, Bolivian President Evo Morales said Monday.

“We are going to defend Latin and South America from this military aggression of the United States,” Morales said at the closing of the Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA) in Havana.

“In the same way the gringos (United States) were defeated in Vietnam, it will happen to them in the region, because Latin America will react to any aggression,” Morales said.

Morales said that in a short time there will be no pro-U.S. president or government in Latin America, and there “will not be colonies or masters to impose their policies, not even of political character.”

Morales said that the use of Colombian military bases by U.S. troops threatens South America, mainly Venezuela, so he suggested that a continental referendum be held to show the region’s rejection of agreements between Colombia and the United States.
