The Democratic Republic of the Congo. Africa’s second largest country by area, and fourth largest by population, has proven to be one of the world’s most over-looked regions in terms of regular media coverage of on-going violence and human rights abuses.
On November 20, a rebel group known as M23 managed to take over the third largest city in the country, Goma, located in the Eastern part of the country near Rwanda. They pulled out shortly afterward, following a failed attempt by the DRC military to oust them.
“There are nuances to this story, but it can be summarized in one phrase: the eastern Congo is under Rwandan control, and has been since 1996. The DRC’s government has tried, since 1998, to re-assert control over the Kivus, and the warfare in the east is over control: of the land, of the people, and of course, of the mines.”
