The New York Times daily quotes a high-ranking source in the US Government as saying that the US experts have discovered about one trillion dollars of untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, specifically copper, gold, cobalt and lithium.

The deposits are so rich that they could turn Afghanistan into one of the world’s main exporters of mineral resources. At present Afghan residents live largely off drug production.

The deposits have been found in various regions of Afghanistan, including the ones bordering on Pakistan, where the ISAF units’ clashes with Taliban are the most frequent.
